Personal statement

I am a photographer and film-maker, so I would like to continue in that way of working but would like to try new ways of work that I have been doing the last 31 years.

I would like to try different sizes in the photographic work and to make some super-8 films, shot in London or something about your city as I have not been to your city or work in it. I would continue with what I have been doing since I lefted Art School.

I have always lived in Sussex or London all my life so to do my work in London makes sense to me.

The work between 2000-2002 has not been photographic or films. The work is little patchwork of letters from the alphabet to make words that you can read backwards. E.g. redrum is murder etc. I have about twenty different ones already. They are all hand sewn together with long stitches in felt.

The photographic work, I can do the printing myself on different sized paper. When I make super-8 films, I have my own projector and cameras to shoot the films on.

My work is time based media and I love to work with a narrative like a little story or film stills. My work has said by others “to be like paintings “. It is like the instant, my photographs are what it is. It could be a table and a chair and that is what it will be. Just what you see is what you get. My work is when I go round to take pictures. I get a series of photographs and then narrow them down to two or five and make choices about them.

The Photographers/ Artists who influence me are Mark Rothko, Wolfgang Tillmans, William Eggelston and Walker Evans.

Mark Rothko did colour field paintings has me in love with colour and how they mix together. The other three photographers have more of a documentary style of work which I really like. Wolfgang Tillmans however has the work moved before taking the picture but Eggleston and Evans are just documentary in the areas there live in. My photographs have the objects not moved in the pictures.

They are just how I find them, I like to travel a lot and my work reflects this. I have been too many places around the world. I did my photojournalism course in 2005-2006. So I have experience and not a teaching qualification but did go on a PGCE and it wasn’t right for me but I am willing to do something on this job if I get it. Since 2001-till present day I have been travelling around the world and making artworks and stuff. All about daily life and the things around us.

From 2006-2018, I have tried to do much more drawing in one self. I like life drawing very much and the figure form of us humans. So from 2015, I do life drawing once a month till present day. I also like nature drawings so I draw flowers, trees and plants. I like to draw everyday life too, still-life or everyday situations.
